ellen stokes shadle/DanceWorks is a New York City-based contemporary dance company under the artistic direction of Ellen Stokes Shadle.
DanceWorks' passion is that of vigorous, athletic movement. The technical and physical capacities of the "dancer-as-athlete" become the means with which to explore and develop an artistic idea. The creative process and product becomes one where content is assembled into a structure and arrangement that is to be the most effectual in connecting with our audiences.
DanceWorks believes that the physicality of dance is also its artistry: even the softest movement can contain a simmering and vital intensity equal to comparatively more overtly powerful movement. In addition, a piece of dance is not, for example, "celebratory" merely because of any assigned mood of delight or festivity. There is pure and genuine joy and celebration even in the most pensive, or provocative works simply because that introspection, or inspiration has been given a voice of expression.
That said, whether conceptually-driven or purely movement-driven, whether the message be through shape, gesture, or story, DanceWorks' repertory communicates the visceral experience: the joys in our veins, the nervousness in our stomachs, the confusions in our pores, the memories in our cells.
The magic of dance is that it is an art form that is visual, yet our experience of it is so much more than what we are seeing. Dance's effects go much deeper than our eyes. Dance experienced fully is being drunk on love. Dance is an experience that perhaps elusively, but always profoundly, stimulates us emotionally, viscerally, and countless ways for which we have no name yet. JOIN US! |
